Lenovo Tab M10 HD: New Cheaper Version With HD Screen & Android 9

The new Lenovo Tab M10 HD is a new family tablet with a 10-inch HD screen, Android 9.0 Pie, and a kids mode. What changes compared to the normal Tab M10?

Without giving an announcement or press release, Lenovo released a new and simpler version of theLenovo Tab M10 (review). The new version is simply calledLenovo Tab M10 HDand features an HD resolution instead of a full HD screen. While we get Android 9.0 Pie out of the box now, the processor is weaker too.

In the US, Lenovo is starting to sell the new Tab M10 HD with a price tag of 179 US Dollars. While we don’t know prices for Europe or Asia yet, it seems like Lenovo will sell it internationally because it’s listed on several regional websites.

They continue to sell the normal Tab M10 and Smart Tab M10 which got updated to Android 9.0 Pie recently. So, they continue to be up-to-date too.

Lenovo Tab M10 HD Comparison: What’s Different?

Judging from its design, you won’t notice any major differences at first sight if you compare the Tab M10 HD and the normal Tab M10 with each other. We continue to get plastic bodies, a standard headphone jack, a microSD card slot, and a PIN connector for an optional dock.

However, some things do change. For instance, instead of USB C Lenovo decided to use the older micro USB port. And it is a bit thicker with 8.5mm compared to 8.1mm. The weight of 480g stays the same. And on the top, it continues to have two stereo speakers that are angled towards the front a bit.

The cameras have a resolution of 5 and 2 megapixels with both. If you want, you can use the front-facing camera to unlock the M10 HD using facial recognition. Since the webcam is used alone, it probably is not as secure as Apple’s Face ID.

Lenovo changed the resolution of the 10.1-inch screen. Yes, it’s still an IPS screen but instead of 1920 x 1200 pixels, we have to live with 1280 x 800 pixels with the new version. That’s quite a low pixel density on a 10-inch device. You probably will be able to see single pixels and texts might not look as sharp as you’re probably used to from your phone.

Inside the Lenovo Tab M10 HD sits a Qualcomm Snapdragon 429 SoC. That’s a quad-core chip with four cores that are clocked at up to 2GHz each. In addition to that, the tablet has 2GB of RAM and a 32GB internal storage. The standard M10, on the other hand, features a stronger Snapdragon 450 octa-core chipset and 2GB or 3GB of RAM, depending on the version you’re getting.

You might not notice huge differences when surfing the web a bit and watching YouTube or Netflix. Those are simple tasks and the resolution is lower, so not as many pixels have to be moved. However, it clearly won’t be a great gaming device.

Android 9.0 Pie & Kids Mode

The Tab M10 is Lenovo’s first tablet that directly ships with Android 9.0 Pie out of the box. With that being said,the normal Tab M10 and Tab P10 have gotten an update to Android 9 already. I’m guessing the software of the two will be identical.

I always like that Lenovo is not using a heavy UI. We’re always getting pretty much vanilla Android and that’s the case here too. There are some additional features though. For example, the Tab M10 HD has a kids mode build in. You can also use a Dolby app to adjust the sound to your liking.

To judge the Lenovo Tab M10 HD fairly, we’ll have to review it. However, based on its spec sheet alone, it’s an interesting choice if you really want almost pure Android. Otherwise theSamsung Galaxy Tab A 10.1 2019 is a more powerful alternative with a full HD screenand probably longer updates. Depending on where you’re from, you might be able to get it for 200 US Dollars or even a bit less.

The full screen image/video with the guy swimming is shown at 1280X720 (16:9) which is how images and videos are rendered in. Not 1280X800 (16:10). So when watching movies, downloading images, etc., set or get the resolution/aspect ratio that’s 1280X720 (16:9). Anything else that’s not a movie or image or app that’s full screen will be rendered in 1280X800 and you will see that the bezel of the longer side of the tablet will be thinner than the shorter side. So it’s not really a 16:10 screen as you might expect with your media anyway.
